Fog

It was very dark this morning. I looked at the clock and I read on its digital screen that it was seven but I was sure that it was in error. Outside it was still very dark.

I turned the radio on and heard them announce the time six, momentarily I declared victory until I heard the advertisement that followed from the To-me company that now has strung beads at the amazing price of fifty-nine cents a dozen. Mardi Gras, I thought, New Orleans, Central Time zone. It was indeed seven here. The To-me Company name is derived from the battle cry of Mardi Gras, "Throw some to me!" An apt battle cry to the festival of the flesh that precedes Lent a time of sober reflection on the difference that Christ makes to us in this life.

I pulled my flesh out of the bed and threw some clothes on and made my way to the computer to update my Spiritual Thought page. The puppy followed me up the hill close at my heels. I fed the pig that now is so fat and seems ready to deliver her piglets any day that she sleeps tight against the gate so that when food comes her way she only has to turn around. She turned around when she saw me approaching and quickly gobbled down the two dog biscuits I fed her.

Now it is quite foggy here, no doubt it was earlier too which accounts for the level of darkness at so late an hour this morning. The fog seems to blur one's vision so that it is difficult to make out objects that are relatively close by.

But there are different kinds of fog that we all experience in life that do the same thing.

There is the fog of love that gets a person all starry eyed and feeling that there are no problems in life that love can not overtake.

There is the fog of prosperity that clouds the vision so poorly that one thinks if only I had more money all my problems would be solved.

There is the fog of success and fame that makes one feel that if only I could rise above the obscurity of the present I would feel differently.

Too often we waste the valuable energies that have been given to us in our ability to intercede and pray to call out to the heavens, "Throw all of these to me," only to find that the To-me company is selling all of these very cheaply and they really are worth very little.

When the fog clears we are suddenly made aware of what really exist just as St. Paul had said all those years ago.

But meanwhile it is still quite foggy here and the pig is still nestled against the gate awaiting my next pass by.
