Just North of Antiville, IN

Last night as I drove through an area of Indiana that is populated with Amish farms it struck me. If at 12:01 A.M. January 1, 2000 most of the world plunges into darkness and suddenly we find all of our electronic conveniences(dependence) useless, there are a people who will notice no difference--the Amish.

At the beginning of this century they really were not unlike the mass of us, but at the end of this century they stand out as an example of all that progress has wrought. It could be that we will all learn that lesson harshly in six months, if suddenly we were all forced to go back to a simple life without electricity or motor powered vehichles.

If the unthinkable happened these people who seem backward now, would suddenly be the enlightened. We would call on them to teach us to live without all those things that we have embraced to make our lives easier but in the process has made us rather dumb.

This lesson hit home for me a few years ago. When I was away at school and did not have a computer handy. Someone had a typewriter that they said I could borrow. Even though I consider myself proficient on a computer, I found that typing was near impossible. The page riddled with with whiteout and variation in the darkness of the type looked like a cave drawing.

Driving alongside a horse drawn cart that moved with a gentle speed, I spied the Amish couple who looked straight ahead their task in mind. The ease of life for us has made it too easy to take our eyes off the road. There lies the danger even if everything stays the same on January 1, 2000.
